Purchasing Courses (Philippines)

USING MOBILE DIRECT CARRIER BILLING TO PURCHASE EDUCATIONAL MOBILE APPS

 written: 11/22/18

Online learning has become extremely convenient to people who seek to gain latest information, increase skill set, earn certificates, build portfolios and more. There are tons of courses meant to increase your AQ, EQ, IQ and all the quotients there is, you name it. Usually they are free resources. I prefer paid courses since almost all lectures are according to their objectives and exercise files are available -- which is relevant to one's learning. I chose Udemy since its course would be accessible lifetime after a one time payment and student reviews are there, too.

(This post will share my journey and personal opinion in using Mobile Direct Carrier to purchase any application from Google Play.)

Having been excited to enroll to a programming course, I quickly grabbed my debit card for this good investment. But Google Play rejected my debit card information, hence, comes the Globe Direct Carrier Billing (actually mine is TM, a prepaid one) to grab courses' 95% discount.

Regardless how cheap a product is, your mobile carrier would charge (depending on the carrier's policy) over and above the display price on the Google Play App Store. In Philippine Telcos (Smart and Globe), the charge is 12% additional VAT. This is impractical for huge amount of transactions such as annual payments, or long term expenditures.

[Imagine spending another 62 pesos on top of the 510-peso course. I could buy myself a Jollibee burger steak with an extra rice for that 12% charge.]

Having learned about the price to pay, debit cards always win for zero transaction fee, to all intents and purposes. By then, using Direct Carrier billing in Google Play is efficient especially to those who urgently need the product, avoid tedious task of reloading their debit cards, prevent the risk of credit's unknown charges, or seek to spend their overflowing pockets.
